Methods of Teaching MBBS in European University Georgia

Student oriented teaching method assures students’ active involvement in the study process. Teaching methods include the case-based teaching, discussions, seminars and projects. The following methods are used during the education process:

  1. Interactive lectures – Is a creative process where a lecturer and a student take part simultaneously. The main aim of the lecture is to understand the idea of subject to be learned what implies a creative and active perception of the presented material. In addition, an attention should be paid to the basic thesis of the material, definitions, indications, assumptions. Critical analysis of main issues, facts and ideas are necessary. A lecture provides logically consistent acknowledgement of main thesis of the discipline to be learned. It is based on students’ free-thinking ability in the particular environment and understanding of the basic scientific problems.
  2. Seminar / Group (team) work -implies dividing a group into teams and preparing verbal presentations on the indicated issues or papering questions for each other and answering them orally by a speaker. Gradual study of theoretical knowledge uses theoretical materials independently to solve specific problems. Students independent work with computer, simulators and manikins. Group work might also include discussion on the given topics.
  3. Laboratory work – is more demonstrative and gives better visualization opportunity of the process. Student learns experimental setup, must acquire use and regulation of lab devices. Lab gives opportunity to comprehend theoretical material given during the lecture. Implicates following activities: experimental ets, video and motional data demonstration etc. during this process knowledge of covered material is assessed
  4. Learning at simulation training class using simulators and manikins – can be the way to develop health professionals’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes, whilst protecting patients from unnecessary risks. Simulation-based medical education can be a platform, which provides a valuable tool in learning to mitigate ethical tensions and resolve practical dilemmas.

Practical work -. It helps to demonstrate and comprehend theoretical knowledge acquired in lecture and may include following activities:

  • Demonstration of Practical skills – demonstration/observation of learning samples, conduction operation, which gives opportunity to perceive organs topography accurately, physical examination of the patient, assessment of examination results, data registration, performing manipulations, instrumental examinations and result analysis (interpretation of conclusions and grade assessment of lesion/damage), analysis of laboratory results – supports elaboration of result analysis and synthesis.
  • Case study –This is based on the discussion of specific cases. “Case” is so called instrument, which enables to use theoretical knowledge to solve practical cases. The combination of theory and practice, the method develops the decision-making skills within time limits. Student develops analytical skills, group work, alternative reasoning, planning activities and projecting results.
  • Role-playing games – It’s a system is made up of material and imaginary factors that create the most relevant to the reality environment in which students solve problems within their role. This method develops: the ability to assess their capabilities; the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practice; the ability to make the right decisions in emergency situations; the ability to use an adequate method to assess and solve a problem or set of problems; the ability to understand professional values and work with these values.

Clinical Practice/ Bedside teaching, clerkship is the important part of the learning process and consists of planed and intended activity of student. It provides practical skills and strengthening of academic theoretical knowledge. This method prepares student for future professional activity. There are three parts involved in “clinical practice” – University, student, and potential employer/practice facility. Therefore, it is important for all three parts: communication of academic education and theory to real world. It helps to develop new competences, renewal of educational programs according to the requirements of changing market.

Discussion – collaborative exchange of ideas among a teacher and students or among students for the purpose of furthering students thinking, learning, problem solving, understanding, or literary appreciation. Participants present multiple points of view, respond to the ideas of others, and reflect on their own ideas in an effort to build their knowledge, understanding, or interpretation of the  10 matter at hand. Discussions may occur among members of a small group, or whole class and be teacher-led or student-led.

Debate – requires students to work as individuals and as a team to research critical issues, prepare and present a logical argument, actively listen to various perspectives, differentiate between subjective and objective information, ask cogent questions, integrate relevant information, develop empathy, and formulate their own opinions based on evidence.

Verbal presentation – demonstration of knowledge of theoretical topics, discussion over specific issues in the form of narration or answering questions.

Presentation- Each student shall prepare a presentation and report it in the group. The presentation shows the student’s knowledge and gained skills during the course. It may be prepared individually or in a group work. The aim of the project is to skill students in searching and processing the relevant references, make them develop own point of view concerning the issue.

Quiz – written task, – checking the knowledge of studied theoretical topics and skills of integration of the knowledge.

PBL – Problem-based learning sessions – is a learning method based on the principle of using problems as a starting point for the acquisition and integration of new knowledge. It is the process of acquiring new knowledge based on recognition of a need to learn. PBL is a student centered learning method that involves discussions among students who resolve loosely structured problems to facilitate learning. The method not only facilitates the acquisition of knowledge but also that of other generic desirable attributes such as effective communication skills, ability to work in a team (teamwork), problem-solving skills, self-directed learning ability, ability to share information, appreciate other points of view and identification of personal strengths and weak-nesses. It enhances critical appraisal, literature retrieval and encourages ongoing learning within a team environment.

CBL – case based learning – is an active problem analysis method, the aim of method is teaching on the bases of specific examples (case analysis). The treatment of oral diseases remains a pressing issue for human health. Nowadays scientific discussion concerning ethiopathogenesis of dental diseases, diagnosis and treatment focuses on the study of parts of oral cavity in realtion with the whole body – in normal and pathological conditions. The program covers basic and clinical courses,that help graduates view the human body as an integrated system in the context of dental pathologies.

In addition, dentistry, as well as other branches of medicine, is undergoing permanent development:a new technical aquipment are created, new methods of treatment are developed. Beyond health-related issues various fields of dentistry have aqcuired aesthetic purposethat has significantly increased the demand for these specialists.

Under the circumstances and with the purpose of internationalization of Georgian higher education the University has developed English language program – Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). Its goal is to develop competencesthat will promotehis/her further successful professional studies, improvement of the acquired skills or will be able to work as a doctor’s assistant.

The aim of the Dental/Stomatology Program

The program’s aim is to prepare specialists with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills that meet the modern labour market requirements those who will successfully pass the program of professional trainingand be a required specialist at a labour market. The program’s aim is to develop students practical skills in various fields of dentistry, in particular, the program covers the following dental subjects: Children’s Therapeutic Dentistry, Dental Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery, Orthodonty. The courses provide for the work insimulation laboratory, role playing, etc., that provide students’ direct contact with the objects of dental examination, instruments and materials and promote the development of practical skills in
different fields of dentistry.

The scope of Dental/Stomatology educational program

  1. The educational program is based on the ECTS system, orientedon the student and based on the student workload required to achieve the goals of the program.
  2. Duration of the program is 5 yearsthat is 10 semesters and includes 300 credits.
  3. 1 credit corresponds to 25 hours
  4. Creditexpresses a student’s workload in hours required for the successful complation of the course and achievement of the learning outcomes. Credit hours consist of contact hours and hours of independent work.
  5. During asemester students must obtain 30 credits (30 credits = 750 hrs.), per year – 60 credits, however, according to the program specifics and the student’s individual workload, number of credits may be less or more than 60, but no more than 75.

Students workload within the one-cycle educational program consists of contact and independent work in the frame of: lectures, group work (practical training/laboratory work, etc.),phantom laboratory, work at clinical departmentsfor developing practical/clinical skills,preparation for and passingthe midterm and final examination.

Library European University

General Rules of Library –

  1. European University Library foundation is staffed with printed materials and digital items.
  2. The library is open from Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 20:00. Week day closed – Sunday.
  3. For the utilization of the library, Registration is required.

Student Library Registration –

  1. All students, employed personnel, and other persons, if they take part in arranging/doing any educational, training program/course in the institution within the relevant agreement, can use the library.
  2. Readers should  register
  3. For registration a student (employee / person) needs to provide an ID card and European University card based on which a personal card of the reader is filled. After this, the interested person can benefit from any library service.

The Right of the Students in Library –

  1. To use any library service, including the resources available on the electronic carrier, print out needed information from the e-books during the hours of the library reading room operation
  2. The reader has right to receive various library materials for the temporary use for free  with the right to work in the reading hall or take it out
  3. The permission to take the library material out of the reading hall is given under the decision of a librarian. If the library fund has less than two copies of the library item to be given to the reader temporarily, it shall be allowed inside the reading room only. In case of more than two copies, the timeframe for lending a book depends on the number of the books and the frequency of request. A number of the days the book can be borrowed is 1 to 7 days. Student is allowed to borrow textbooks for an entire term if the library has more than 10 items of them. Fiction books can be borrowed for 15 days. Periodicals, press, journals, encyclopedias, dictionaries and CDs are allowed only in the reading room.
  4. The reader has the right to complain to the management bodies of the institution about the violation of his/her rights as defined by the rules set forth in this Regulation, which shall be reviewed within 2 weeks.

Scholarship in European University, Georgia

There are two types of scholarships available at the European university :

  1. The first one depends on high academic performance.
  2. And the second – on high student activity

The first Scholarship :

Students with high academic performance who have A grades in all subjects will receive a monthly scholarship of 200 GEL during the following semester

The Second Scholarship:

The purpose of the Student Activity Competition is to encourage European University students to be engaged in extracurricular activities such as participating in scientific – research activities, local and international conferences, training courses, public lectures and workshops, as well as sport and cultural events and meetings organized by the administration.

The top 3 students identified in the Student Activity Competition will receive a scholarship of 100 GEL each month during the following semester.
